Communication 101: How to Talk with Beauty Clients

The beauty industry can be an awesome place to work. There are many exciting and rewarding aspects that come with being a cosmetologist, barber, or any type of beauty professional. Once you start your beauty career, you will come across many different types of personalities and knowing how to work with all of them will help you in your profession. Knowing how to communicate with each client can help you be a more successful beauty professional. Here are some tips to keep your client relationships sweet!
I Know What I Want
Sometimes you will get clients who sit in your chair and have a vision of exactly what they want. They will describe their vision to you of what they want you to create and this should make your job easier, right? It can, but only if you take the time to talk with them and fully understand what their vision is. If a client tells you what they want, repeat it back to them in your own words to make sure you are understanding them correctly. This can help avoid miscommunications which should lead to extra happy customers who got what they were hoping for!
Just Do Whatever You Think Will Look Good
Other times you will get customers who have no idea what they want, they just know they need to change their style. These types of customers will tell you to do whatever you think will look good. This can be really fun because you get to use your creativity and give them a look that compliments them. A good idea for a client like this is to describe your idea to them first so they know what your plan is. If it’s something that they don’t think matches their personality, you give them a chance to tell you that. Once you and the client agree on a new look, you can get to work and show off your creativity!
Say What?
When you start your career in the beauty industry you will find that people really enjoy talking with you. When clients come in for a haircut, style, or manicure they will want to chit chat. If you work in the same place for a while, you’ll start to make friends with some of your clients. When start to talk with you, respond in meaningful ways. Ask them more questions about themselves and try to get to know them a little bit during your time with them. Asking them questions and getting to know more about them and what they are interested in will make them feel good. If they leave feeling valued and liked by you, they are probably much more likely to come back and who knows, you may learn something really cool from them.
